To build the infrastructure to make the data archive available to scholars in Japan and other
countries, the Data Archive Unit develops systems for using various data necessary for civil
society studies, and also collects, transforms and stores various data.
 
 

S Systems developed or under construction

 

S-1: Multilingual Search System (Patented)

 
A search system of laws and ordinances, case laws, and diplomatic documents in seven

languages (Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Indonesian, Malay)

 

S-2: Parliamentary minute search system

 
A system collecting minute data of the Lower and Upper House, and prefectural assemblies and
enabling a comprehensive search/analysis, previously not possible due to the use of different
systems
 

S-3: Parliamentary minute collecting system

 

A system automatically collecting updated minute data and storing in S-2

 

 S-4: External access managing system

 
Previously encoding problems were experienced due to an authentication system relying on the
user’s browser. An authentication system which does not rely on the user’s browser was
developed
 
 

D Data currently stored in the Data Archive Unit

 

D-1: Citizen attitude survey data in Japan and other countries

 
Attitude surveys conducted by the CGCS and survey data from after WWII-present obtained by

the CGCS are collected and stored in both aggregate data and raw data form

 
 

D-2: Population census data in Japan and other countries

 
Population census data (national, prefectural, municipal and mesh-based) from 1955-present are
stored. Data between 1955-1970 were entered manually. Data of other countries including Korea
and Russia are collected (national and local government-based) and stored
 

D-3: Election results in Japan and other countries

 
National Election results (municipal-based) since the first elections under the new Japanese
Constitution, the 23rd Lower House Election and the 1st Upper House Election, are collected and
stored. Election results of the first few elections in the early years after WWII were manually
entered. Election results of other countries including Korea and Russia are collected (national and

local government-based) and stored

 

D-4: Laws and ordinances in Japan and other countries

 
Laws and ordinances in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are
collected and stored. The search system in S-1 can be used.
 

D-5: Case laws in Japan and other countries

 
Cases in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are collected and
stored. The search system in S-1 can be used.
 

D-6: Minute data in Japan

 
Minute data of the Lower and Upper House, and prefectural assemblies are collected and stored.
The system in S-2 can be used to conduct a comprehensive search/analysis. System in S-3 is used
to update data automatically
 

D-7: Election Platform data in Japan

 
Election Platforms of all the candidates of Lower House general elections, Upper House elections,
prefectural assembly elections, and government-decreed municipal elections are collected and

stored. The content of platforms are analyzed by category and stored

 

D-8: Korean Newspaper data

 
Articles from Dong-a Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo are collected, web-enabled and stored. The search
system in S-1 can be used.
 

D-9: British Diplomatic documents

 

Declassified diplomatic documents are collected and stored. Keyword search can be used
